あるものです。
英語を介して
人々と会話していると
最終的に
”英語で何を語るのか？
英語で何を伝えたいのか？”
という部分に到達すると思います。
例えペラペラと
ハイスピードで話せるようになって、
旅先のファーストフード店で
やり取りできるだけの英語力が身に付いたとしても、
いざ、日本について聞かれたときに
あなたは何を語ることが出来ますか？
そもそも日本語で
日本について
何を語ることが出来ますか？
日本語でも語れなかったら、
いざ、英語で聞かれたときに
内容のない会話しか交わせないと
いうことになりかねません。

下記資料によると
約126,000,000人
The Japanese population is approximately one hundred twenty-six million.
です。
現在の人口構成は55歳以上が40.6%を占め、働き盛りの25歳～54歳は全体の33.7%です。人口は減少傾向にあり数年以内に人口の2人に1人が50歳以上になると言われています。
国外に出ると日本のことをそれはそれは聞かれます。日本人なのに日本のことを何も知らない・・・これはとても恥ずかしいことです。最低限、英語で言えるようになっておきたいものですね。

日本のGDPが
現在、世界何位か知っていますか？
GDP(Gross Domestic Product)はどうでしょう？
GDP＝国内総生産は2019年世界3位。
一方、経済成長率（economic growth rate）は
191ヶ国中、世界170位です。
このままだとGDPも
順位を落とすことが目に見えていますね。
落合陽一さん著の「2030年の世界地図帳」によると
アフリカの成長率が著しいとありましたが、
まさに1位のリビアがそれを物語っています。
そんな経済の話なんてしないわーと
思われるかもしれませんが、
日本の話ですよ？自分の母国の話。
自国の人口や経済成長率くらいは
知っていて損はないかと思います。
何より、世界における日本の立ち位置を
知る上で意識を向けておくことは、
とても大切だと思います。
”日本を知る”重要性について
実際にあったスモールトークを
ご紹介したいと思います。
渡米2年目の夏休みに
長女の親友ローレライのお宅に招待されました。
おじいちゃんおばあちゃんが
アリゾナから遊びに来ていて、
その夏休みずっと一緒だったそうです。
おじいちゃんおばあちゃんはメキシカンですが、
ローレライのお母さんであるラケルは
アメリカ育ちなのでアメリカン。
ローレライはアメリカンのラケルと
フィリピーナ＆アメリカンのハーフのお父さんとの
クオーターです。
本当に美しいお嬢さんです。
クオーターって美男美女が多いです。
アメリカで生まれ育っているので、
母国語は英語ですが、
家ではスペイン語もたまに話しているそう。
ローレライのお父さんはハーフですが、
アメリカ生まれアメリカ育ちなので、
タガログ語は話せません。
それでもローレライのお父さんは
フィリピーナのお母さんに育てられたので
アジアンフードが大好きで
娘のローレライもご飯、海苔、枝豆大好き。
フィリピーナのロイダがお持たせした
ルンピアも何本も食べていました。
その日、私はメキシカンのおじいちゃんおばあちゃん、
フィリピーナのロイダ、ローレライのお母さんのラケルと
Patioで２時間も語り合いました。
お父さん：
So I have one question I'd like to ask you.
What the big difference between Japanese people and South Korean?
わたし：
Well, I don't quite know what South Korean is like.
What do you think?
お父さん：
Well, if I'm wrong, then please say so.
I've heard, when comparing Japanese people and South Korean, Christian is more acceptable to Korean.
わたし：
That's true.
I think it's because Korea belongs to the same continent.
お父さん：
Oh, that's interesting.
わたし：
Oceans surround Japan. So ancient Japanse people used to be always frightened by the fear of being attacked by foreigners. We needed to be united. Thus, ancient Japanse people governed the people by a specific idea which the government solely determined. Well, still now it does. The people had to follow the rule because they were forced to be united. So I think Japanese people are not tolerant of outsiders or other religions or even cultures. We emphasize the so-called common sense in Japan. It is significant for Japanese people what THE OTHER people think, not what they think themselves. I don't know if the other people might think it's true or not, the Japanese people don't like differences with each other; they're trying to have the same idea as others. So if someone has an exceptional idea, others tend to get rid of him/her. Accordingly, Japanese people look the same at a point of view of their ideas. But when you look at Japanese culture, actually it depends on each family. We deeply respect our ancestors. So each family follows their own rules which inherited by each family. From the high point of view or perspective, Japanese people look the same, but looking at each family with a low viewpoint has its own distinctive culture, discipline, and way of thinking.
お父さん：
That's amazing. So each family has its own culture and discipline even they deserve so-called common sense. How have you adjusted yourself to the new culture like here by then?
わたし：
Well, I felt very lonely because I felt like I was so isolated from the Americans.
So I started my own business to connect with people all over the world. They are all Japanese, and we can share what we're feeling in abroad because everyone who goes abroad for the first time, I believe they feel the same way as I did. So I'm helping them by coaching method, and they're helping me as well.
お父さん：
I'm a pharmacist, and I'm still visiting patients who need my help.
There is a common idea of yours as far as counseling is concerned.
わたし：
Yes, I think so. But one thing big difference between counseling and coaching, the latter is more focusing on the future. Counseling is more like looking back at their background and to cure the issue. Coaching is like, what's your goal? What's your dream? What do you really want to do? And once you decide your goal,
it would help if you focused on the things right in front of you day by day until you achieve your dream.
お父さん：
That's a wonderful job you do. Now you've changed a lot, right?
わたし：
Absolutely. But I cannot openly express my idea in Japan. Because if I hadn't come here, I would have never understood this idea.
お父さん：
It's like Trump people! You can never blame them just because they don't know what the other side of people thinks.
わたし：
Well, that's hard to say yes, but I'll try to disseminate my idea to those in need.
お父さん：
I'm so pleased to know about your background. 'Cause it does not always happen.
It was really nice talking with you.
わたし：
My pleasure talking with you, too.
今回はお父さんと私のやり取りだけに
フォーカスしましたが、
実際にはフィリピーナの友人が
トランプ政権について語ったり
娘さんも実はバイオロジストとして働いていて
私の製薬会社時代の研究職の話でも
話に花が咲きました。
フィリピーナの友人は
初対面のメキシカンのお父さんお母さんに対しても
自身の考えを述べていていかに私を含めて
日本人が初対面で自分はこういうバックグラウンドを持っていて
こんな考えを持っているという話をしないかということを
実感する機会となりました。
実際、この日もたまたまお父さんに
韓国人との宗教観の違いを聞かれたので、
私も自分の考えを述べることが出来ました。
ハーフばかりで異文化を理解している者同士だからこそ
バックグラウンドを共感できて深い部分で
倫理観、宗教観、文化の話を共有できたのかもしれません。

あなたもただ英語を学ぶわけではなく
英語で何を語りたいのか？
常に念頭に置いて学習してください
